There’s nothing wrong with bingeing on your favorite TV series or spending hours testing your gaming skills. It becomes a problem when it’s a diversion from things that really need to get done; like facing deadlines, facing communication where a response is appropriate even if it takes you out of your comfort zone. When we don’t take appropriate action, it’s usually because deep down we’re uncomfortable with the resulting feelings that might come up.
Procrastination doesn’t make the task go away. It just pushes it down the road to be addressed later. All the while your self-esteem is taking a huge hit. A good example of Procrastination’s Cause and Effect would be not paying bills on time. The underlying fear is that there isn’t enough money. Procrastinating doesn’t create more money. It creates late fees, bounced checks, lousy credit and it ultimately makes you feel like a failure. While you are procrastinating, your mind is confirming how ineffectual you are. It’s a vicious cycle. The only way out is to address the root cause.
